Crisfield, Maryland, in Somerset County, sits tucked away on the beautiful Tangier sound of the Chesapeake. Crisfield’s main industry and cuisine comes from the timeless traditions and hard labor of its watermen.
Among the oysters, rock fish and more is the treasure of the Chesapeake, the Blue Crab, and Crisfield has built its economy on this highly sought after delicacy. Every crab season the days begin with fishermen taking to the waters before the break of dawn and giving their all until they make way back to the harbor with the beautiful sunset as a backdrop, fulfilling the dining demand.
Crisfield is home to the National Hard Crab Derby, derived from the crabbing industry. This Labor Day weekend homecoming festival celebrates all aspects of the lifestyle, drawing people from all over the nation. Festivities include a crustacean beauty queen, picking & cooking contests, crab races, and even a boat docking contest between the crab boat captains.
Another crab-themed annual event sponsored by the Chamber is the Governor Tawes Crab & Clam Bake held on the 4th Wednesday of September at Somers Cove Marina. People come from all around Maryland, including the current governor and a variety of political representatives, to partake in an amazing all-you-can-eat seafood extravaganza with entertainment and hobnobbing included!
